WHY DIASTOLE?

2019 ANNUAL REPORT

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

"We both, Mary and Grey, have a faith in human dialog, social intercourse, the amenities of scholarly communication, and the encouragement of these by a felicitous setting. We conceived this Scholars’ Center to further that faith."

FRESH FACES

FOR THEIR 27TH SEASON...

newEar Contemporary Chamber Ensemble is performing their entire concert cycle at Diastole. The ensemble is comprised of talented professional musicians, many of whom are UMKC Conservatory graduates and current students. We have so enjoyed introducing their enthusiastic audience to Diastole, and seeing our space utilized in such unique ways has been especially rewarding.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT

FOR OVER A DECADE...

Diastole has recycled all plastic, aluminum, paper, cardboard, and glass. Last spring, we partnered with Bridging the Gap and Missouri Organic Recycling to implement greener waste-management practices across our property. On top of weekly curbside recycling pickup and our "Baby Ripple" glass bin, we're thrilled to offer the addition of composting stations as part of our responsible waste disposal system.

With more than 7,000 guests enjoying Diastole every year, we know how impactful this change will be—in fact, our landfill-bound waste has already been reduced by an estimated 80%.

We are also encouraging users to reduce their carbon footprint by riding their bike to Diastole, and to facilitate this, we installed a "Diastole blue" bike rack on the south edge of our parking lot!

MORE THAN EVER...

Diastole's mission is crucial in supporting our growing community on Hospital Hill and throughout Kansas City. We have continued to serve students, staff, and faculty as proud members of the UMKC Health Sciences District, and in collaboration with our partners at UMKC, Children's Mercy Hospital, and Truman Medical Center, have been able to extend our reach throughout the globe. In 2019, we hosted visiting physicians, artists, and professors from South Africa, Mexico, and China. We also welcomed resident interns from Nepal and Ghana into the Diastole family.

Our users and visiting scholars are doing critical work to improve their communities, and they offer daily proof that our space is a necessary component of that work.
